Three New Zealand Fantails (Piwakawaka) meet at the Manaia. This piece includes the black morph fantail, which make up less than 5% of the birds total population.
Fantails are often believed to be the messengers of spirits and the large pounamu Manaia holds a similar meaning. It is said that the Manaia is a guardian or protector and connects with the souls of those who have passed. The Pohutukawa flower is symbolic to the beginning and ending of life.
