'Maia' NZ Falcon - Giclée Print
This is Maia, she’s a New Zealand falcon (kārearea). Maia was hack released from Rotorua Museum as part of the ‘On The Wing’ Program – a joint program (between Wingspan National Bird of Prey Centre, Rotorua and Rotorua Museum) that marked the first-ever city release of a threatened species in New Zealand.
To ancient Māori, the kārearea was regarded as sacred and a medium to the gods. They also believed that the kārearea’s cry could foretell the weather.
When a kārearea screams in fine weather, next day there’ll be rain.
When it screams in the rain, next day will be fine.
