Hatupatu (perched on branch) and Maia (on ground) were hack released from Rotorua Museum as part of the ‘On The Wing’ Program – a joint program (between Wingspan National Bird of Prey Centre, Rotorua and Rotorua Museum) that marked the first ever city release of a threatened species in New Zealand hence making conservation history. Since their release, Hatupatu and Maia paired up and have since called the pine forests on the outskirts of Rotorua home and have been successfully breeding in the wild. To this very day, they return to the Museum on a daily basis to partake in the supplementary food put out for them.
